The Organless Corpse Puzzle is the RE9 Care Center Basement's first major puzzle. You must find an Artificial Heart and Artificial Lungs to place into a dissected body, unlocking the door to the Sterilization Chamber. Step-by-step locations + solution below.
| Chapter | Chapter 3 — Care Center Basement |
| Difficulty | ★★ Medium |
| Required items | Artificial Heart, Artificial Lungs |
| Unlocks | Sterilization Chamber door + Quartz Piece |
| Trophy | Anatomy 101 (Bronze) |
| Time to complete | ~10-15 minutes |
Setup: entering the Anatomy Room
The Anatomy Room is in the Care Center Basement's west corridor. After descending from the East Wing 2F (via laundry chute or maintenance staircase — see Care Center Basement walkthrough), follow the west passage past the broken vending machine.
The door is unlocked by default. Inside: a metal autopsy slab with a partially-dissected corpse, two empty organ shelves, and a locked exit door at the far end.
⚠ Don't trigger the door yet. Approaching the exit door before placing organs spawns a zombie ambush. Locate both organs first, then approach.
Step 1: Find the Artificial Heart
The Artificial Heart is locked inside the wall cabinet across from the slab (east wall). You need the cabinet key first.
- Exit the Anatomy Room back toward the central corridor.
- Enter the Records Office (adjacent door on your right).
- Open the desk's middle drawer — the cabinet key is inside, on top of a stack of pathology reports.
- Return to the Anatomy Room and use the key on the wall cabinet.
- Take the Artificial Heart. It's a small glass-encased mechanical heart, glows faint red.
Step 2: Find the Artificial Lungs
The Artificial Lungs are on the upper shelf of the storage closet to the east of the Anatomy Room. You need the rolling ladder from the same closet.
- Enter the storage closet (door labeled "Surgical Supplies").
- Push the rolling ladder to the back wall (interact with it to move it 2 meters east).
- Climb the ladder and take the Artificial Lungs from the top shelf.
- Note: the closet door auto-closes behind you — don't worry, it doesn't lock.
Step 3: Place organs in correct order
Return to the corpse on the slab. Approach the body to bring up the placement prompt.
- Insert the Artificial Heart first (left cavity).
- Then insert the Artificial Lungs (right cavity).
- The body twitches briefly (don't panic — it's not coming back to life), then drops a Hemorrhetic Injector.
- The exit door at the far end of the room unlocks. The Sterilization Chamber awaits.
💡 Order matters. If you try to insert lungs before heart, the prompt rejects it. Heart always goes first.
Reward + what's behind the door
Direct rewards from the puzzle:
- 1× Hemorrhetic Injector (from the corpse — one-shot kill on most enemies)
- "Anatomy 101" Bronze trophy unlock
- Access to the Sterilization Chamber (next puzzle: Blood Specimen Analyzer)
- Eventual Quartz Piece drop (after solving the Blood Analyzer puzzle)
Tips and gotchas
- The cabinet key respawns nothing — once you use it, it's consumed.
- The rolling ladder can get stuck if you push it before clearing the floor debris. Pick up the broken pipe first.
- On Insanity, two zombies wander the corridor between Records Office and Anatomy Room. Knife-stealth or parry.
- The corpse drop varies by difficulty — Standard: 1 Hemorrhetic Injector; Insanity: 2 + crafting materials.
- Don't skip the Records Office — there's also a file ("Patient #047 Autopsy Notes") that counts toward the 75 files trophy.
