All 16 RE9 specific locations and iconic areas ranked S to D by atmospheric impact, lore density, combat encounter quality, memorable moments, and replay desire. This is not a chapters ranking — these are the rooms, halls, and spaces inside chapters that define RE9. Locations like the RPD main hall, ARK sterilization chamber, Vivien's lab.

Why #1: Capcom recreated the RE2 Remake RPD main hall pixel-by-pixel, then aged it 28 years. Same fountain. Same staircase. Same Goddess statue. Bloodstained walls. Documents from "Officer Leon Kennedy 1998" still on the desk. This is the most emotionally loaded single room in any modern RE game. Visit it on Insanity and you'll find new audio logs that weren't there on Standard.
See RPD walkthrough and Mr. X boss guide.
Why #2: A 40-foot vertical chamber lined with bio-containment equipment. Sickly green emergency lighting. Liquefied mold dripping from the ceiling. Plant 43's root system covers half the walls. This is where Grace finds Vivien's final audio diary. Combat here is brutal — confined space, multiple enemy spawns. Visually the most ambitious horror environment Capcom has built in a decade.
Why #3: Hidden behind the ARK executive office. This is where the entire narrative pays off. Every photograph, every research note, every recorded message — they're all here. Finding Eveline's Locket triggers the Eveline-Vivien connection cutscene. This room is 5 minutes of gameplay but defines the game.
Why A-tier: The room where the mystery begins. Filing cabinets, dusty paper, the framed Vivien Ashcroft research photo on the wall. Vivien's 2009 research notes live here. Atmospheric without being theatrical — a slow burn room.
Why A-tier: The Organless Corpse puzzle is here. Surgical tables. Specimen jars. A central corpse on an examination platform missing its heart and lungs. The room is genuinely unsettling — sterile bright light, distant industrial hum, the puzzle solution feels like a violation. Best puzzle environment in modern RE.
Why A-tier: Above the RPD orphanage. Children's toys covered in dust. Drawings on the walls. Silver Pendant hidden here. The psychological horror peak of Chapter 6.
Why A-tier: Chunk's first appearance. Steam-filled basement. Pipe networks. Limited visibility. The encounter design here teaches you to fear Chunk before you even fight him. Punches above the chapter's overall C-tier ranking.
The Raccoon City Clock Tower (vertical combat with Titan Spinner), Water Treatment Control Room (Marksman's Eye safe), Greenhouse (the only courtyard area that justifies itself), Care Center Lobby (entry establishment), and RPD Evidence Locker (Bloodhound charm) are all solid but not transcendent.
ARK Executive Office (hub for Antique Coin) and Raccoon City Alley Shop (Knife Edge charm vendor) serve gameplay function but lack environmental personality.
Care Center 3rd Floor PT Room and Wrenwood Lobby are corridors with minor pickups. Speedrunners pass through in under 20 seconds.
If you want to experience RE9's best locations efficiently (e.g., for a screenshot run or NG+ atmosphere appreciation), this is the optimal route:
This tour skips chapters 4, 5, and 7. Total time: ~3 hours on Casual difficulty.
RE9's photo mode (added in v1.02) gives access to free camera. Best photogenic spots:
| Location | Why | Best time of day |
|---|---|---|
| RPD Main Hall | Iconic geometry + lighting | Twilight cycle |
| ARK Sterilization Chamber | Green emergency lighting + vertical scale | Mid-battle |
| Vivien's Lab | Tight composition with documents/photos | Pre-confrontation |
| Orphanage Attic | Sunbeam through dust | Morning cycle |
| Raccoon City Clock Tower | City vista at altitude | Sunset |
Q: Are these locations from RE2 Remake actually playable?
A: The RPD Main Hall is — but only the entry hall and the staircase. The other RPD rooms (West office, library, S.T.A.R.S. office) are referenced but not playable in RE9.
Q: Which location took longest to design?
A: According to the Famitsu interview, the ARK Sterilization Chamber took 18 months from concept to final. Capcom's most iterated single environment.
Q: Can I revisit locations after completing a chapter?
A: Only in NG+. Standard playthroughs lock chapters once exited. NG+ allows free travel between unlocked chapters.
Q: Are there hidden locations not on this list?
A: One — the "Marcus Halverson childhood room" mini-area in Chapter 8. Insanity-only. Contains his original family audio logs. Not a major location but emotionally significant.
Q: Which location is most spoilable?
A: Vivien's Lab. Don't look up photos of this room before playing through Chapter 8. The reveal there is the franchise's most important lore moment in years.
Q: Are RE7/RE8 locations referenced?
A: The Baker House (RE7) appears in a Mia Winters flashback. Castle Dimitrescu (RE8) is referenced in audio logs but not visited. RE9 keeps its environmental identity distinct.
Q: Will RE10 return to any RE9 location?
A: Possibly. Director Nakanishi hinted that the ARK Facility may be revisited in RE10 (May 2026 Famitsu interview).
Q: What's the largest location by square footage?
A: ARK Sterilization Chamber (40m tall × 25m diameter). Followed by RPD Main Hall (35m × 20m).
