Why #1: The single most important cutscene in RE9. Grace enters Vivien's Lab and finds her mother's final research notes, the photograph of her with Eveline, and the audio diary explaining everything. The cinematography is restrained — close-ups of Grace's face as the truth lands. The score drops to a single piano line. This is what RE9 was building toward for 8 chapters.
Key reveal: Vivien Ashcroft worked for The Connections in 2009 and was Eveline's closest human contact. Grace is not Eveline's sister or descendant — Grace's entire life was shaped by her mother's grief over Eveline.
Why #2: The franchise's most theatrical boss finale since Wesker's volcano death. Three QTE prompts (each missable = bad ending). The knife parry timing window (0.4s) determines True vs Insanity Secret ending. The score peaks here. The animation team's career-best work.
See Victor Gideon boss guide for exact QTE timing.
Why #3: Leon walks into the RPD after 28 years. The camera does the talking — slow pan from the fountain to the Goddess statue to the staircase to Leon's face. He says nothing for 90 seconds. The score uses a remix of the original RE2 RPD theme. Veterans will cry. Newcomers will feel weight without knowing why.
Why #4: The series' most graceful (no pun intended) franchise crossover in years. Mia appears in helicopter EW-2017. She speaks to Grace about Vivien (they crossed paths in 2014). Three lines about Rose: "She's safe. She's not coming. That's the deal we made." Mia leaves without speaking Ethan's name. Cissy Jones' delivery is haunting.
See Mia Winters RE9 cameo explained.
Why A-tier: The most emotionally devastating cutscene in RE9 — but only Insanity players see it. As Grace approaches the final Chunk encounter, his family audio log plays in full: Marcus Halverson reading bedtime stories to his daughter Lily, hospital recordings during her leukemia treatment, his last voice message to her before her death. The fight starts immediately after. Drops to A-tier only because it's gated behind Insanity difficulty — many fans never experience it.
Why A-tier: Triggered by Eveline's Locket pickup in Vivien's Lab. Photo-collage style. Documentary-tone narration over slowly revealed photographs. Shows 17 years of Vivien's research, ending with the moment she decided to send Grace into Rhodes Hill.
Why A-tier: Practical effects + CGI blend. Mr. X's body deforms in real-time — bones cracking, muscle tearing, skin stretching. Sound design is gut-wrenching. The transformation completes in a flash of red light. Combat resumes immediately. Best monster transformation in the franchise since RE4 Krauser.
See Mr. X boss guide.
Why A-tier: Grace lowered into the chamber on a maintenance platform. Slow vertical reveal of the 40-foot space. Plant 43's roots covering everything. Distant industrial alarms. Pure environmental horror.
Grace Finds Family Photograph (Chapter 2 records office) — setup moment, low-key but essential.
The Girl Drowning Execution — short, brutal, controversial.
Titan Spinner Free-Fall Finisher — flashy, well-executed.
Ada Wong Beacon Cutscene (NG+ Insanity) — sets up RE10 but never shows Ada herself.
Wrenwood Hotel Opening Tutorial — too long for a hook (4 minutes). Establishes Grace but pace drags.
Chapter 4 Drone Reveal — interesting concept undercooked.
End Credits Sequence — competent but unmemorable. Don't skip on first viewing for completionist secret stinger.
Title Screen Reveal Animation — exists. That's it.

Q: Can I skip cutscenes on NG+?
A: Yes, except for QTE cutscenes (Victor Gideon finale) which require button input. NG+ adds a "skip" prompt to most cutscenes after first viewing.
Q: Total cutscene runtime?
A: ~42 minutes for all 16 ranked cutscenes. Adding minor cutscenes (item pickups, door reveals) brings full game cutscene runtime to ~75 minutes.
Q: Are cutscenes pre-rendered or real-time?
A: Real-time. RE Engine renders all cutscenes in-engine, allowing player costume choices to appear in finale scenes.
Q: Best cutscene for first-time viewers?
A: RPD Main Hall Entry (#3). Even without RE2 knowledge, the cinematography sells the moment.
Q: Can I rewatch cutscenes?
A: Yes. NG+ unlocks a "Cutscene Gallery" in the main menu after first completion.
Q: Are there hidden cutscenes?
A: Two — Ada Wong Beacon (NG+ Insanity) and a 30-second post-credits stinger only accessible by waiting through the full credits roll.
Q: Will RE10 reference RE9 cutscenes?
A: Likely. The Ada Beacon and the Eveline Bulgaria photograph both function as RE10 setup. Director Nakanishi hinted at returning cinematic motifs (Famitsu May 2026).
Q: What's the most-discussed cutscene online?
A: Mia Winters Grace True Ending. Reddit's RE9 subreddit has 4,000+ comments debating whether the cameo respects or diminishes Mia's character.
