RE4 Remake set the modern RE combat standard. RE9 builds on it with refinements. Both have parry systems but RE9’s 0.6-second Mortal Edge window is more forgiving than RE4 Remake’s 0.3-second knife parry. Combat philosophy differs: RE4R is fast and aggressive, RE9 is methodical and tactical.
| Category | Comparison |
|---|---|
| Parry system | RE4 Remake: knife parry, 0.3s window, requires precise timing. RE9: Mortal Edge parry, 0.6s window, more forgiving. Plus counter window after parry. |
| Weapon variety | RE4 Remake: 25+ weapons across categories. RE9: 17 weapons. RE4R has more variety; RE9 is more focused. |
| Movement system | RE4 Remake: free movement during combat. RE9: slightly slower movement, more deliberate positioning. RE9 punishes panic; RE4R rewards aggression. |
| Boss encounters | RE4 Remake: 11 named bosses. RE9: 10 named bosses (Victor Gideon, Chunk, Mr. X, Plant 43, etc.). Similar count but RE9 bosses have more phases. |
| Difficulty scaling | RE4 Remake: Standard / Hardcore / Professional. RE9: Casual / Standard / Insanity. RE9 Insanity is harder than RE4 Professional (subjective consensus). |
| Length | RE4 Remake: 16-18 hours main campaign. RE9: 12-15 hours main campaign. RE4R is longer. |
| Setting | RE4 Remake: rural Spain. RE9: USA East Coast + ARK Facility + Raccoon City. RE9 has more variety in environments. |
| Which to play first | Both are excellent. RE4 Remake is more mainstream / accessible. RE9 has deeper lore (Eveline mystery). New to series: RE4R. Long-time fan: RE9. |
Both games are excellent in their own ways. RE9 is the natural evolution if you’ve played the prior games. The franchise continues to refine combat mechanics with each entry. Real fans benefit from playing both — they complement each other rather than compete.
